Not a theory. Not next year. Now.<\/p><p>Sites stood ready. Paid subcontractors to stand around. Programme dates are slipping. client confidence getting a hit. Insurers are asking tougher questions than ever. And here is the part that I think is truly new: cyber has crossed over from an IT cost-line into a delivery risk. The same sort of risk you would already plan for with things like weather, ground conditions, supply chain or labour.<\/p><p>If you are a COO, CIO or Operations Director in construction, this is now your problem too, not just the IT team\u2019s.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6d0681b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"6d0681b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>What&#8217;s Actually Changed in Construction<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-18dec37 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"18dec37\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>In the last 18 months, three things have changed.<\/p><p><strong>First, the attackers have identified construction as a soft target and a hard deadline.<\/strong> You run distributed sites. You have a huge ecosystem of suppliers. You depend on connected machines, BIM environments, cloud-based design files and mobile workforces. Attackers know that when a contractor can\u2019t operate, the pressure to pay or capitulate is enormous.<\/p><p><strong>Second, the attack surface is the supply chain. Most construction companies aren\u2019t hacked directly.<\/strong> They are breached via a smaller supplier, a design partner or a temporary site system that no one is watching. The bigger the project, the longer the chain, the more places risk can be lurking.<\/p><p><strong>Third, the clients and the insurers have woken up.<\/strong> Evidence of security posture is now required from Tier 1 contractors for pre-qualification. Insurers are restricting cyber exclusions. Minimum standards are tightening in public sector frameworks. The bar has been moved.<\/p><p>All in all, that means cyber is no longer something you can park with the IT team and hope it stays quiet. Now it\u2019s in the delivery conversation.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-305c5bb elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"305c5bb\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Why the &#8220;It&#8217;s an IT Problem&#8221; Framing Fails You<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-bd75241 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"bd75241\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>I speak with construction leaders weekly and the most common stance I hear is some version of: &#8220;We have an IT provider. They look after it.&#8221;<\/p><p>I see why. You had enough to worry about. You have a business to run. Cyber is technical, scary and easy to outsource.<\/p><p>But here\u2019s the rub. \u201cWhen a cyber event takes a site down, it\u2019s no longer a technical discussion. It works. It\u2019s commercial. \u201cThat\u2019s contractual. It\u2019s about standing. And by the time it arrives on the COO\u2019s desk, it\u2019s a crisis, not a project.<\/p><p>Three uncomfortable patterns we see again and again:<\/p><ul><li><strong>Cyber budget exists, but cyber outcomes don&#8217;t.<\/strong> Money has been spent on tools, but nobody can clearly answer the question: &#8220;If we got hit tomorrow, how long would we be offline?&#8221;<\/li><li><strong>Security is reactive, not continuous.<\/strong> A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.d2na.com\/index.php\/penetration-testing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pen test<\/a> was done two years ago. A policy was written. A box was ticked. Nothing has been continuously improved since.<\/li><li><strong>The supply chain isn&#8217;t included.<\/strong> Internal IT is reasonably tight, but suppliers and joint venture partners are a black box. That&#8217;s exactly where the next incident is going to come from.<\/li><\/ul><p>If any of those sound familiar, you\u2019re not behind, you\u2019re normal. If the answer is &#8220;sort of,&#8221; or &#8220;I&#8217;d have to ask IT,&#8221; that is a delivery risk hiding in plain sight.
